I'm thinking of making "the switch" and buy a new iBook G4 12", but i have two concerns:
A friend of mine has an iBook G3 700MHz, OS-X, and 384 Mb ram, and he has problems running high resolution DivX-movies smoothly.
* Is this new iBook G4 fast enough for this task?
* Is the monitor-spanning-firmwarehack (extended desktop) REALLY working on the new iBook G4? (post links, please)
Anyone with the new iBook G4 12" who has tested this, please answer...

Soon to be a switcher?

Dunno about the firmware hack, I read that it's working. But I'm quite sure that playing divx is no problem for that machine, since my 600 MHz iBook is already powerful enough for that task.

My 600mhz iBook has no problems with DivX either.

Depends. My iBook 700 Mhz does not play back my hi-res DivX file which I encoded myself - video = DivX 5.1 @ 1000 kbp and audio = MP3 @ 160kbps - at the full fps. It is watchable but not smooth.
With the DivX files one downloaded from the net (uh-hum), you may be OK.

One iMac, iBook, one iPod, way too many PCs.

Do the DivX players available for OS-X take advantage of the altivec in the G4?
If so, the new iBook should be faster... don't you think?

I'll do some experimenting with my 800 G4 ibook and post the results.

What player is he using? I found that mplayer2 is much better at playing DivX movies than vlc or Quicktime. For the record, I could watch DivX movies on a 300MHz Celeron running Windows, a 800MHz G4 therefore should be more than fast enough.

Stink different.

i use the divx codec (3ivx.com) in quicktime, and divx doctor 2 (iuno, look with google) on my 700mhz/16vram ibook. no problems if i dont get too frisky and try to run a whole ton of stuff at a time.
anyone else use the doctor? i swear by it
Dan.

I don't like having to convert the files first. I use mplayer2 or the codec from divx.com - they play the files as they are.

The best/fastest way to play DivX is to use the divx codec from divx.com with Quicktime. It's *way* faster than MPlayer. But the codec doesn't seem to work on Panther... I guess we'll have to wait for a few days to get an updated codec.
And btw, I'm pretty sure a 800mhz G4 can decode any divx out there...

High-res DivX (960Kbps/160Kbps MP3) plays fine on my PowerMac G4/400/1GB/Radeon 8500 whether using QuickTime+3ivx, vlc, or mplayer. MPlayer seems to give the best performance, though, because the video playback is a bit smoother, and with less noticeable choppiness. vlc comes next, and lastly Quicktime+3ivX. I don't use the "Doctor" because I hate having to do pre-viewing operations just to watch something (and especially if it turns out to be not what I intended to watch).
Don't know if this is a fair comparison, but at least in terms of raw CPU processing power, the newer iBooks ought to blow my Mac away (except when it comes to disk/video).
