I recently got the 15" Al... jeez I love it. (muuuch faster than the revA 12") I also just ordered the Hitachi 7k60 7200RPM drive, and plan on using the stock Apple drive in a firewire case as a back-up.

I am wondering if anyone has replaced the drive and knows if it is easy, OR how to do it. Is there any online documentation for dis/assembly? I used to work in the laptop division at IBM, so I'm not too afraid of opening it up - I think I just love my baby too much!

I'm also concerned about the 'white spots' - what if they appear and I have to send the unit back? Will they notice, and will it void the warranty? Maybe I should take it to certified person for that reason alone?

Finally, anyone have any comments about this drive and what they noticed? Rob at BareFeats couldn't recommend it enough...

Oh Yea... anyone have a suggestion for back-up software thats better than Carbon Copy Cloner. Scheduling the back-up would be nice, and so would mirroring...

thanks!

I don't know about the 15 Alu PBooks, but I've just done a replacement of my hard drive in my 15 Ti PBook and it was easy, especially with these instructions:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=111925

A.
Ti PowerBook 667mhz
c/w self-installed uj815 "SuperDrive"
----
Dual 2.0Ghz G5
----
Apple II (1mhz?!)
----
Newton 2100
----
iPod 5gb

Unlike the TiBook, the drive in the 15" Aluminum PB is not considered user-replaceable. That doesn't mean that it can't be done, but you'll void the warranty. You could always replace the original drive if you have to send it to Apple, but every time you open the case there's a chance something will break.

Given the white spots and other issues with this model, I'd hold off for a couple of months.

You can see what the PB looks like inside here.

Dunno about the 15 but here is how I did it to my rev B 17.

I have my stock 80gb drive in a firewire case if I have to send it in.

Here is the link for the 17:

Good luck!
