Hi all,
I received my new iBook this morning from MacMall. It's the 12" stock model with the small addition of an extra 384 MB RAM.
It's a lovely machine in every way - such a vast upgrade from my clamshell SE iBook from 2000 - but it crashes nonstop. I've been forced to restart it at least ten times. The first time I turned on the power it crashed - I had to restart it three more times before the start up wizard ran correctly. Since I got home an hour ago, I've restarted it at least four more times.
I've also had applications quit on me in the middle of completely mundane tasks, like adding a contact to my Address Book or surfing the Iomega web site in Safari.
What gives? Am I the only person who is having this problem or is this common among owners of the new iBook.
I wonder if it's at all related to the extra memory that MacMall installed. It seems unlikely that they would have done it incorrectly, but it's hard to think what else could have happened to my computer between my door and its production that is making it so unstable.
Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions are very welcome.
Thanks,
Rilina
PS-My apologies to the mods if this should be in the Software forum.

RAM modules come in 64, 126, 256MB, etc, so I assume you had 128 built-in and they added 256 for a total of 384 (or vice-versa).
It's possible that you got a bad RAM module. Try taking out the RAM module and see if the crashes stop. It's pretty easy (if you have a small screwdriver); instructions should be in the manual that came with the iBook.

No, the base model had 256 MB. MacMall added 384 for a total of 640 MB.
I'm on hold with Apple Customer Support right now--we'll see if they can help.

You're mistaken. The 256 stock is in a 128+128 config. You would have had them add 512 and take out the original 128.

Ah, I see. Well, I don't have a small enough screwdriver at home to take out the suspect RAM myself, so it's off to the Apple Store after work tomorrow. What a bummer.
Edited to add: I just got off the phone with MacMall. The rep there said they've been receiving a lot of calls about the iBooks - they think they've gotten a bad batch of RAM. Anyway, I'm going to call back tomorrow to speak with a manager, who will hopefully be able to resolve all this.
