Hi all --

Potential switcher here... hoping everyone can chime in and give me some advice on if the new 12 inch G4 ibook is the right Mac for me.

My plan is to use the laptop on my upcoming trip to Thailand. I'll be snapping a lot of pics on my Canon G2, and what to be able to download them to the laptop for viewing, editing, archiving, etc.

Is the 12 inch G4 ibook up to the task? Meaning... I use a "digital workflow" with my G2 currently on my PC, shooting in RAW format and then doing a linear conversion of the files. I then import these into Photoshop, where I convert them and apply adjustments (curves, levels, unsharp mask, etc.). Usually I batch process the images... anywhere from 10 to 25 at a time.

I'd opt for a Powerbook... but my signficant other has decided to limit my budget to around $1,000.

Of course, I'll also be using the ibook for daily Web surfing, chat, music, etc. Not to worried on that front It's the photo editing tasks that have me "worried" if the ibook is up to the task.

The iBook should do a fine job, just make sure you get plenty of RAM. 640 MB should be a minimum. 1 GB modules should work in the iBook, but they're way too expensive right now.

Congrats on the switch, and have fun in Thailand!

Thanks for the advice -- I was planning on maxing out the RAM.

I still haven't made the official switch... but I find myself spending more and more time here on the boards and apple.com... it's getting hard to resist

pks1850: Don't forget that the 12" G4 iBook maxes out at 640MB RAM.
