ClubMac has got the Ti 1ghz for $2029, about the same price as the new AL 15" 1ghz. The Ti comes with 256m more memory, a 1x Superdrive and a built in Airport card (11b), but the bus speed is a little slower and the video card is an ATI 9000 vs ATI9200.
I was thinking of getting a 1ghz 12 but by the time I up the ram and get an Airport card I'm at $2000 also.
So is the 1ghz Ti a good option? I just want to use it around the house.
Is the Airport reception on the Ti's really that bad? I have a D-Link 614+ wireless router currently. This should work with the Airport correct?
Anybody got Panther on the Ti 1ghz?
Thanks for any advice.

The ti is OK. I have the d-link and a ghzti and reception isn't so on the tibook. The ibook we have is great, but the titanium not so good. Certainly good enough for the places I use it, but I'm not going to tell you it's perfect. Speed-wise, you wouldn't notice a difference between the aluminum and the titanium, so don't worry about that. That said, the titanium is great. If I was buying right now it would also be a tough decision for me.
But I'm not buying right now and have no desire to. I am completely satisfied with my powerbook.

I have Panther on my 1Ghz TiBook and it flies. I am set for the future--I may upgrade when a rev B. G5 Powerbook ships in 2005.

I have to agree with the previous poster. I've been running Panther for a week on my Ti and it's all the computer I'll need for a while.
I had been experimenting with additional RAM and a faster hard drive prior to the upgrade, however I can honestly say after switching to Panther the stock configuration (512 MB/60 gig 4200 rpm) is just fine; also much cheaper ($130 for Panther compared to nearly $500 for the 7K60 and a gig of PC133.) If I was doing a lot of PS or FCP work I would probably keep the faster HD and additional RAM, however they are not necessary for general use.
I'm still considering a 12" for the portability but realistically I will wait until the G5 migrates to the Powerbook line before I buy another notebook.

Keep in mind that the Video card on the new ones are a Radeon 9600. One of the best cards out on the Market right now. The 9200 you are talking about are the iBook ones.
The new processors also has 512k of L2 cache but lacking the L3 cache. But the L2 should more than make up for the speed.

Kelvin,
A few weeks ago I checked out the AlBooks at the Apple Store in Chicago. I wasn't impressed and with the negative reviews of white spots on the screens I immediately went home and bought the TiBook 1 Ghz from Club Mac because it was such a good deal, IMHO. The performance is the same as the AlBook 1 Ghz, but you get the Superdrive that you can hack to burn 2x and you get 256 MB more memory. Also, you if you buy it, you will qualify for the Panther up-to-date program. I got Panther for $20. Panther runs awesome on the TiBook 1 Ghz.
With the TiBook you don't get white spots on your screen!

I second that. Try to find a better deal though.
Note: 4 weeks ago I would have said go Aluminum. But with the screen issues, go Titanium. They are great machines. You just have to be a bit more careful with them. Not as if you are gonna trash the thing though...
