Hi guys,

This may be interesting to old PBs owners considering to upgrade to panther.

I just upgraded my trusty TiPB 400 40GB GNX 5,400 rpm/384 MB with Panther. The finder seems much more responsive, opening applications and running classic works just work better. Happy.

The interesting stuff:

The XBench (Xbench version 1.0b3 (v1.0b3) scores have changed a lot from Jaguar to Panther:

Result Jaguar (.2, .3, .4, .5):
59.94/59.64/59.73/58.25/

Result Panther:
69.71

Scores (Jaguar and Panther, non updates) where obtained after performing clean install using always the same XBench version 1.0b3 (v1.0b3).

Overall a 16 % increase in XBench performance (higher than expected)

Of course, I'm aware that XBench does not seem as the most reliable method for evaluating a system speed, but since I have always used the same version, and scores have always been fairly consistent, i just wanted to let you know.

Threat test: 54.38 to 60.31

Memory test: 76.29 to 97.12

Quartz graphic test: 57.65 to 64.75

User interface test: 54.71 to 93.09 !!

Disk test: 64.74 to 60.73 (opposite)

Additionally (an based on another post). I have experienced faster boot up. From 1:15 to 55 seconds (with identical settings).

Right now I'm very impress (it's been 10 days using Panter). The speed increase is higher than expected. Even exposé is quite smooth (on a 8 MB ATI GPU!).

Overall, it was worthy to update (although I'm student so price was $69.99).

I know people may be laughing, but my TiPB feels like is going to last me until rev b G5 PBs are out (pretty much a year and a half, I hope).

Much more worth it than Jaguar was. Panther offers significant speed increases, and many features that fill in the gaps. I always said Panther would be OSX in its Solid state, and I was right. Panther is definitely worth the money. Just as fast as OS9 used to be. I am very impressed with it. Even the installation is better. For example now you choose the startup disk before you restart instead of having to have to hold down the option key. This is just one of the little things that make it worth it. Not to mention the long awaited Password Protect upon wake from sleep (great for powerbook users). I could go on and on and on and on. Jaguar was almost the foundation of what panther is now. Panther improves on everything from Quartz extreme to productivity. Many people hate the new Finder but I love it. Apple doesn't make crappy interfaces. Brushed metal is fine for the way that interface works, and I find I can access directories much faster. Furthermore they finally put dividers in the menus which is another bonus. All around panther improved just about everything. I have been running it sense the 28th i think when i got it in the mail. Friday the day it released, and haven't had one issue with it.

However there are a few minor bugs in networking, and other things that have been widely documented on many forums. So far I have seen this but it hasn't effected the way I work on my home LAN. If you want more info about this I can give it to you. Otherwise you probably already read about it. So I am anticipating 10.3.1 which will most likely fix this issue as well as the firewire ones.

By the way I am not laughing that computer should last you four years from the day you bought it. Screw what other people say about that.

Slightly offtopic, but how do you do this? And does the option key still work at bootup?

Maybe I'm missing something here (I'm still on jaguar) but you can change startup disks/folders from System Preferences>Startup Disk.
