Funny, I have a 466 Key Lime SE up on eBay right now, and it runs Panther great. That's what 576MB RAM. I'm selling it loaded with Jaguar, not Panther. I suspect you might be all right with the 300MHz iBook, but I don't know that I'd go much lower than 466MHz, personally. Guess it just depends on what you're willing to put up with, speedwise....

I'll probably be giving this a try on my wife's iBook this week. She has the blueberry clamshell with 288 MB of RAM (I may have to look into upping this) and is curious to try OS X. I've warned her it might not be the speediest thing in the world, but she's willing to give it a try.
I'll let you know how it goes when we make the install.

I had a 300MHz iBook with 320MB RAM and a 30GB hard drive. I had it loaded with OSX 10.2. I didn't find that it was all that slow. It had nowhere near the speed of my iBook 700 but it did just fine. I wouldn't try doing any graphics intense work or a ton of multi-tasking. For everyday use such as surfing the net, writing papers and things of that nature it did great.
Panther would probably speed it up a little more. I say go for it. I don't think you would regret it. It's also better than OS 9 and much more stable. I would sacrifice the speed for stability any day.

There are distinct difference between the ibook 300-500. Primarily video ram, bus, and cache
Both Jag and Panther shine with the minimum 16 megs of vram for Quartz, along with the 100mhz bus and 512k cache in the ibook 700-900.
Jaq on the 700 with ram maxed out rips, gonna wait out until panther though, jaq handles everything I need perfectly.

I've been reading this thread w/ interest as I have a RevA iBook.
But Quadra's post forced me to think about something I alread knew. The guts of the original vs newer iBooks is different. OSX is optimized to take advantage of the better video and altevec guts of the G4.
I've suddenly concluded that there is no point in putting Jaguar on my precious - especially since I'm running OS X.2 already. I might as well put the $130 back in my pocket and continue w/ what I've got for the next couple of years.
Jaguar will never give a *significant* speed kick to any Rev A iBook due to that iBook's internal architecture. Also, the added bells and whistles are not compelling for upgrading this machine.
I don't want to nickel and dime myself with upgrades that are more and more marginalized for me as my "frozen in time" iBook gets farther and farther away from the current thing and the software that makes use of it.
BOTTOM LINE: If I *MUST* have what the newest latest-and-greatest OS upgrade has, then it's time to get a new computer. That time has not come. Given my current configuration, my precious still "has legs".

radarbob,
note, I upgraded the wife's iBook 500/320gb ram and noticed a definite increase in gui speed over Jag. I used to go crazy using her machine, but now find it to be a good experience. If you look at it as a way to upgrade both of your machines, the cost may be justifiable. Although, with your rev a, you may be happier enjoying the greatness of OS9.

I assume no one w/clamshell here ran into the screen-res problem in Panther? (Plenty of it on the Apple forum, clamshells in 10.3 unable to select native screen resolution, and look "washed-out". Solution is to set res from Classic, but setting won't stick on restarts.)

Check one of the earlier postings on this forum. I think it is titled Clamshell Users Beware of Panther. Or something to that effect.

I had the "washed-out" problem on my 600MHz iBook (Late 2001). I changed my calibrated profile in the Displays control panel.
