Hello all. I'm new here. I'd like to buy the 15" al, but I'd like to be able to get into os9 (not classic mode) occasionally for programs like Protools Free and Astartes CD Copy2 as well as some others that were never carbonized. Is it possible to configure these new powerbooks to be dual bootable?

thanks,

No,
Welcome to the mac community.

I am sure you will love a new PB.

I use both PC's and Macs, and I use my mac whenever I can

Give it a try

And no you cant, you'll have to get an old tower (G4) or an Tibook (any one will do )

I don't know if the new ibooks are dual boot, but i know the old ones are

Forcelite...

I have a 12" PB and am considering upgrading to the new 15". Would you recommend? I hear about all the issues and it discourages me, but understand many of the users in this forum are "power" users and are going to be much more critical (as they have a right to), but I am looking for reasonable feedback from a user who did the same thing I am considering. Also, why did you switch from 12" to 15"? Power? Screen size?

Thanks,

Brian

Ok. Thanks alot for the reply. So is it definetly impossible to boot into os9 on an Al book? I mean, there's no wiping the hard drive clean and starting from scratch or some kinda hack to getting into 9 (not classic)? If so, could someone please explain why its not possible, like if its a memory issue or something? I'd really like to purchase an Al, but I'll go for the Ti if that's the best way to get a dual boot powerbook...

thanks.

Yes it is definitely impossible. Apple did not update 9 with the appropriate boot loaders and drivers to work with them. This is true for all Macs released in the last 6 months or so. If you want to boot OS 9, go with a Ti.

Unfortunately you cannot boot into 9, although the programs you want to use would probably work fine in Classic.

Well Apple's own Disk Utility (in Panther)/Disk Copy (older OSes) will do the same thing as CD-Copy.

As for Protools... there isn't an OS X-native version of the free one yet?

(anaphora68: both of those programs would run extraordinarily badly in Classic, if they could even run at all.)

As for Protools, unfortunately, no. There is no Protools version that will run on osX without using Digidesigns' proprietary hardware like Protools Free could. That means no working on music while on the train with just headphones. Tooki, thanks for the tip about the Disc Utility, I'll have to give that a go. Anyways, most of the plugins I have are for os9 only so it looks like I'll have to wait a while before going only osX.

thanks everybody!
