Question for you veteran powerbook users (mine is working now, thanks to some Viking memory and a whole lot of screaming at MacMall) -
When at home and plugged in, is it better to shut down my powerbook or just put it to sleep? I've been just shutting the lid and sending it off to slumberland, but I'm wondering if it would be better to power it completely down while I'm away at work all day....
What's the conventional wisodom on this one?

I'm currently on an iBook, wich is my 4th Apple laptop. I hardly can recall selecting "Shut Down" ever.

conventional wisdom is sleep when plugged in; however, with the indecent amount of power drain by the sleeping panther, what is the conventional wisdom for sleep on battery?

I'm with ya there, my PBG4/800 is my 4th Apple laptop also and I haven't shut down any of them unless I had to upgrade a hard drive or memory. Otherwise, it's asleep if I leave it at home for the day or on the road if I take it to the office with me.
(It's also one reason why I laugh when Bill Gates compares OS X startup times to XP startup times. Startup time? What the hell is that? Wake from sleep time? Instant!)
Also while asleep on battery, I have no problems with it asleep for a day or so. I remember older PowerBooks under OS 9 got about a week of sleep time. Not sure under Panther though.

deviousgelatin: I always put mine to "sleep." Every once in a while (couple of months), I'll shut it down. Use Cocktail to optimize and maintain your PowerBook. There are other freeware apps, but I like Cocktail more. Run it about once a month and your system will thank you for it.
