So my boss has just handed me a ton of work that I need to archive. Media of choice is DVD, so seeing as I'm pretty much going to be burning around the clock I was thinking of getting my PB17 in on the action.
Only thing is it still burns at 1x and at that speed I think it takes about an hour to burn a DVD.
I remember someone writing that they'd found an update that burned DVD's at 2x. I was wondering if it's reliable and what the link is. And also, how to install it?

This is unsupported by Apple but many including myself have used it with success but read the entire page. There is a downgrade just in case but a failed install will mean a total drive replacement...OUCH!!!! I did my upgrade after I installed Panther but havent burned a disc at 2x yet. Good Luck and post back on how it went.

Yikes!! The reprecussions of a failed install are too much. I don't think I'll be trying it out after all...I need my PB. Maybe I'll try when this thing gets a bit older or I find myself a backup computer...

Too cheap.
Besides, this is my personal computer, the machine I use at work has a burner so it's no biggie. I just like finishing assignments efficiently and since I really don't use my optical drive much anymore (thanks to the UT2k3 update) I could just have a DVD burning in the background whilst I did some work.

Just to be clear, DVD-RW (or is it only DVD-R) on a 17" burns only at 1X but if the firmware is adjusted using this software it will burn at 2X right?
But by doing this the drive is "downgraded" right? What is the negative of this "downgrade"?
I'm a little confused by all of this.

I'm not sure about the RW capabilities of the optical drive, but I was talking about burning a DVD-R at 1x.
As for the negative sides of downgrading, I have no idea. I was under the impression that this firmware is provided by a third party and thus void of being an upgrade or a downgrade, but that's really just semantics.
In any old case, I won't be doing it...just too risky in my head.
