Hmm.

Just sold my 8 week old TiBook 867...

The reasons? Well, hmm. I don't really know!

I need Airport to prevent my girlfriend throttling me in my sleep with one of the multitude of Cat 5 cables around the house... and I figured I may as well future proof myself and go for AE.

I'm not using my Powerbook much at all, and it is consinged to merely browsing the net and email... seems like a waste. I have not used my Apple LCD with the Powerbook for like 9 weeks so I figure I won't miss DVI.

So, for less than the amount of money I have received from the PB, I am able to get from Apple with my HE discount:

iBook 800 G4,
40 Gig HD,
256MB RAM,
Bluetooth,

Airport Extreme Card.
Airport Extreme Basestation.

Booq Sleeve.

So, am I crazy?? Am I going to regret this?

Your thoughts appreciated...

Na Marc your fine,

You will get better airport reception, an newer machine, bluetooth, and not to mention a fresh start with applecare.

You did ok

I dont want to put words in AssassyN's mouth, but I believe he took the plunge for the biggest and best (the first 17'), when he first got into Macs,

Then he realized his real computing needs and found a way to get 2 computers for the price of the 17'.

Plus I think he wanted a little more portability

(AssassyN correct me anytime if I am wrong)

well, I did basically the opposite as you a couple weeks ago: upgraded from a 12" Rev A Powerbook G4/867 to a TiBook G4/800.

Basically same speed (TiBook is noticeably snappier though), drives, etc. But the SCREEN is sweet. I can't imagine going back to 1024x768.

On the other hand, Airport reception is definitely NOT as good (although perfectly fine for my purposes).

It sounds like you know what's important for your setup so I'm sure it'll work out fine!

Thanks for the input... it is really appreciated!

The Ti is now sold so I have to make my mind up as to the iBook as I'll be Macless on Thursday otherwise! However, in reflection, the Ti really was the best Mac I have owned in ages, and had it had AE I would still keep it... it was awesome.

I just hope above all hope that this iBook is the *dream* machine for me, that will stay for ages!! Well 2 years at least... (Rev B G5 PB time?...)

It seems much more durable, has better battery life, and I'll be much happier carrying it about with me, has the same core features as the Ti, so I am hopeful...

Although, so far in 22 months I have gone through;

iMac DV+ -sold as it was too slow

DP800 Quicksilver - sold as it was *way* too loud

Cube 1 - sold as it was a bit flakey

Cube 2 - Sold to fund faster machine

DP 867 - Very flakey indeed... and loud in equal measure. After the 5th repair it had to go!)

iBook 466SE... Still with me!! Awesome machine

Powerbook G4 867 12" Combo. (sold because of no external DVI capabilities...

Ti Powerbook G4 867 15" - sold because of AE...!

(Oh and 3 Apple CRT Displays, 2 LCDs, an Apple LCD and numerous peripherals!)

When I look at it this way, maybe I am just too picky...

At least if the iBook is still with me in 12 months time, it will have proved itself as an excellent machine!!

Since late 2001, when I got my first computer upgrade in five years (not a huge step, going from a PowerMac 7100 to a PowerMac 8100 ), I've gone through:

PowerMac 8100/100 - late 2001 to April 2002
PowerBook G3/233/rev 2 - April 2002 to October 2002
PowerMac G4/500 dual - October 2002 to December 2002
iBook G3/800/Combo - December 2002 to September 2003
eMac/1 GHz/Combo - September 2003 to present

Before the 8100, I had a 7100/80 for about five years. This was before I was "into" Macs, I just used them for Adobe Illustrator and games. I kind of discovered the Mac web community when my family got high-speed internet that I could access from my room instead of having to connect on one of the internet-enabled computers. I actually had a pretty cool setup with the 8100. When I got the Wallstreet (a hand-down from my dad who got a PowerBook G4 as a replacement), it had just a 14" monitor, but it also had a big stereo system hooked up to it, 112 MB of RAM, and two hard drives (1 GB and 4.5 GB). And my cat (rest her soul ) loved to sleep on top of the monitor.

As you can see, I was torn between mobility and power. I don't have enough money for both. After the Wallstreet, I had a bunch of money burning a hole in my pocket so I got about the best machine I could afford, a dual 500. Going from the Wallstreet's 2 GB hard drive to the PowerMac's 40 GB was nice, but that wasn't enough so I also bought an 80 GB hard drive in addition to the 40 GB. I think my biggest mistake was selling the PowerMac. Having the mobility of the iBook was nice, and I did use it, but I didn't use it anymore this school year so I decided to ditch the slow-ass G3 and get a system with some bite. I couldn't find anything that could beat the 1 GHz eMac for price/performance, so that's where I am now. I'm thinking I'll replace it with a used PowerMac G5 in a couple years.

EDIT: I also went through two iPods - a 5 GB from April 2002 through November 2002, and a 10 GB third generation from May 2003 to present. I can't go without an iPod, I know that now!

I got into Macs a little over a year ago after seeing the 'Swticher' ad campaign. Before that, I was a heavy Wintel user. Since then, I've gone through:

iMac G4 800 (sold)
PowerBook Ti 667 (sold)
iBook G3 (fiancee)
PowerBook Al 17
PowerMac G5
PowerBook Al 12 w/DVI
2 iPods, 2 ACD and one iSight

I'm now using the PB12 as the go between office and home; and the PM G5 as my home machine. Before the iPods I was primary a MD user, but now the MD sits there. All the machines are AIrPort or Extreme with Base Station at the office and home. Working wireless is great whether I am out on the balcony, sitting on the couch or in bed.

What the hell?? Am I the only person who buys a machine and sticks with it?. I got myself a 1Ghz TiBook around the 12th of december last year and have no plans to sell it for at least a year or more at the current time.

As for the 11b/11g thing, so what, you're only surfing the net, if you need transfer speed there is a socket in the back that will give you Gig-e which beats the pants right the hell off a wireless connection. I think i used my ethernet port for the first time in like 3 months last week when i transfered a 2gb backup off of an old machine.

After using the iMac, I was truly impress with OS X and decided to replace my Wintel machines.

On a side note, the jack behind the Base Station are 10/100BASE-T Ethernet, not GigE (there is a difference). Working wireless is awesome, whether surfing the net, sending email or interfacing with the LAN. If I want to do back-up, hell I'll connect my iPod via Firewire and back-up my data to it.

NGrundy, I'm with you. I started with an LC 11 years ago. Kept it (nursed it along with a Zip drive in '95, when they first came out) until 2/97, when I got a Performa 6360. Kept that until November of 2000, when I got my G4/gigabit ethernet, with what seemed incredibly fast 400 MZ processor. Still have that machine; have only upgraded the ram. Now I have gone through two very used Powerbooks. still have them both, as a matter of fact, though I don't know anyone who wants a 165. The 3400 was and is a very nice little machine, but the trackpad broke so now you have to use a mouse with it. My kids will get it out to play games every once in a while.

And I got a 12-in PB last February and have no intentions of trading it in. Has AE, which I love. I'm planning to get a processor upgrade for my desktop, though -- but I'm only going to do 600, I think. then I should be able to get a good year more out of this machine (which actually, has served me VERY well.

No ipod, no cinema display (still have an Apple 15-inch!), no isight. (I'm asking for an Ipod for christmas, though.)

I was refering to the ethernet port in the back of the powerbook (well 15 and 17 anyway). even an AE base station can't push more than 50% of it's ethernet's port total capacity.

Oh yeah and I know there are differences between 100 and 1000mbit connections, like, well, gige/fx/fc is faster for a start, and gig has nice things like jumbo frames, which for transfering large streams of data is a great thing, though should only be turned on if testing shows that they will give an improvement in through put. 1.25MB/s 12.5MB/sec 125MB/sec, take your pick 10/100/1000.

Your right on the GigE with the 15 and 17,...bummer that the 12 doesn't have it. If I really need that transfer speed, then I would use the G5 or my 17. Only thing is most homes and broad carriers cannot offer GigE connection at the time and in the office, the port connections are only 10/100 Ethernet interface. It's still a nice option once GigE becomes more readily available though.

Haha, I just now found this thread...much thanks for the reference to me!

I see nothing wrong with your logic (of course, my logic is a bit different as we all know ), so just go with what feels right, but make sure you think it through first and you'll be happy

FWIW, I've gone through a Performa 550, Performa 6400, Power Mac G4/400, G4/867 dual, ibook/500, ibook/800 and am now on my 5th PowerBook G4.

I think I may have caught the AssassyN plague.

I've been considering a Powerbook to replace my 700mhz eMac, as I need the room due to a new baby, but I've been procrastinating because I have so throughly enjoyed my 700mhz eMac. Even though my eMac is a low end model, it doesn't feel very slow to me so I figure that any of the Powerbooks, with their faster CPUs and bus speed, should be cool.

A couple of other things are also making me hesitate. First, the knowledge that I could buy a way more powerful desktop Mac for what I will pay for the Powerbook annoys me. Second, I can't get Applecare here is Florida, which I consider to be important when owning a Powerbook.

As for Mac ownership history, here's mine:

Powerbook 100
IIsi
WGS 6150
iMac (266mhz G3, Rev C)
G4 Cube (450mhz G4/DVD/Radeon)
iBook (500mhz G3/384MB RAM/15GB HDD/CD)
eMac (700mhz G4/1GB RAM/40GB HDD/CD-RW/Airport)

EDIT: updated iBook information.

Ummm. . . save your money on the Base Station and just get something else cheaper.

The only thing you might regret, as in my case couple of months ago, is the screen space.

I do mostly business work, i.e. Word Processing, Safari, Mail, and iTunes on my 1.25 PB. But when I was using my brother's iBook G3 800mhz, speed wise didn't matter to me that much except that I had to use a Virtual Desktop program, Word on one, Web on another, and Chat.

So if you think you could live w/o the extra space then you should be cool.

Nice machine by the way.
