ok, I'm making the switch and buying a Mac. I've decided on one of the new iBooks, but I can't decide between the 12" 800Mhz and the 14" 933Mhz ..

Will I notice the 133Mhz difference? And is 800Mhz really enough? (I don't know how to compare PowerPC and Intel)

Congrats on deciding to switch... I'm sure when you get a Mac in your possession you won't look back!

Hmm, the 12" and the 14"... touch choice, but it all comes down to what you want to use the machine for.

If you are doing word processing, email and web browsing, I would say that you won't notice the difference at all.

Screen wise, the resolutions are the same, so you get no true extra real estate by buying the 14".

However, of you chose to do some graphics work like photoshop or something more intensive, you may notice 'something' between the 2 machines, but I suspect that the difference would be a second here or there only...

As to if the G4 800 would be fast enough, I would say it is a healthy YES! The G4 is a fine chip, and much much more efficient than the Wintel offerings... combined with 'Altivec' vector processing unit, the G4 should suit all but the most demanding user...

Put it this way, up until 2 months ago, the G4 800 was in Powerbooks costing £2000! and no one complained (that much)! It is hard to comapre it to Intel, but it is more than on a par with all but the most recent chips...

The one thing I would say though is, if you can max out the RAM... you will see a much bigger difference by having much more ram than an extra 133mhz.

I am acutally going from an G4 867 Powerbook to an iBook G4 800, and have no fear it will be more than up to the task!

Good luck on the purchase, and if you have any more questions, people will be happy to help!

Peace,

Marc

Buy the 12". The 14" is way too big if you want to be really portable. And max out the RAM if you can afford to.
iBook G4: 800mhz, 640mb, 40gb ("Astrid")
iPod: 30gb Photo ("Gordon"), 1gb Shuffle ("Tinker Bell")
For the record: I am female
