Just looking at the new iBooks and have a question. Hypothetical purchase would be a 12" with an external LCD. Does the iBook only do 1024x768, or could I get a 17" display and run it at a higer res?

unless you opt for the spanning hack, the other display will be only mirrored (i.e. having the same resolution) if you do opt for the hack then you can run other resolutions (and spanning!) as long as the external monitor supports them. im not sure what would happen if you tried to run your ibook in clamshell mode with an external on mirror, but id hazard a guess that you would be stuck at the same 1024x whatever.

side note. you cannot easily (or cheaply) attach an apple monitor to the ibooks. kinda a pain in the ass, but you learn to ignore the pain. think third party lcd
