Ok there's a part that I would like to get for my pismo, but the sales guy I talked to said he needed my Powerbook serial number first before he could order it or give me a price quote. He said it had something to do with the apple systems. Does this make sense? Why would apple need my serial number?

If you are calling Apple directly this sounds perfectly OK.

Apple prolly used many different brands, firmwares, ect for Pismo's throughout their life, and he needs to match you up with the correct part.

I dont see why you would be so paranoid if you called Apple directly.

I am sure they have your serial on file anyway (unless you bought it second hand or through a thridparty) so its not a big deal.

Are you sure he wasn't asking for the "family" number? Or maybe he wasn't sure... I've had to refer to the family number for certain parts. It is also on the bottom (of my Lombard).

Apple often checks serial numbers for stolen laptops, when customer seems unfamiliar with Apple products.

The question was asked by a reseller sales rep. It just seemed like an odd question at the time, especially for such a simple part.
