my pismo has been running great w/10.3...
except, sometimes, it will not wake from sleep.
this morning, it will not wake at all.

tried cmmnd-control-power, no luck.
tried reset.
tried the power button and heard...4 beeps.

anyone know what that means, and what else i can try??

edit: sleep lite blinks real fast, then stops, then again...

for your linking pleasure. also, unplug your USB peripherals to see if they are causing your sleep problems.

Yes, don't have that FireWire drive plugged in when you reboot or Panther may render it unusable, unmountable, and unformatable. Plugging it in after Panther is started is apparently ok.

Four beeps have traditionally signaled corrupt Boot ROM.

Actually, since he has a Pismo, and therefore FireWire 400, the particular bug you are warning him against doesn't exist.

My ancient copy of Sad Macs recommends "contacting a technician" for four beeps...anyone?

Unfortunately, 400 firewire HAS been implicated with identical issues of wiping the drive 800 has with 10.3 (see MacInTouch and MacFixIt.com). Best to never start with any firewire attached using 10.3 at this point to be safe (most will never have a problem, but there are cases reported).

I am not a tech, but found this basic information researching: There are two copies of boot ROM (non-volatile) on the ROM chip, the second one gets used if the first gets corrupted.

The ROM can be loaded with a firmware update. You should be able to try that yourself safely (only from OS9), it won't load it if not successful and close out with a report.

You should be running firmware version 3.27f2 for 10.3. If it is an earlier version, that's the problem (check in ASP).

Worst case would be needing the ROM chip replaced if it's failing and not just corrupted and only needing reloading.

Having a competent Apple service tech check it out ASAP (your 2nd copy is allowing booting up at all) is probably the wisest option.
