Hi
I ordered a 12" powerbook 2 days ago. I was wondering how much RAM I should have. Is 512 enough and is 768 going to make a big difference ? (What I will do on my powerbbok : surfing the web, iTunes, photo browsing, ...). Thanks

I got my 12" yesterday, with 512MB RAM. I've done similar things to you so far, and haven't had it slow down on me at all yet, so for those uses, i wouldn't bother shelling out on the extra RAM.

But.... I kicked myself when I discovered quite a while after I'd ordered mine, that I could have bought a 512MB stick of RAM for about £10 more than Apple were charging me for the extra 256 that I'd put in. So my advice would be to order it as stock, and then order your extra RAM from someone like crucial.

My alternative is this one :
buy at Macline (Brussels) a 256 MB stick for €70 or a 512 MB one for €156. On the Apple store, a 256 MB costs €100 (not bad) but a 512 stick worth €310 !! So I think I'll go for the 512 @ Macline but I don't know if this is not just too much for my needs

Adding 256 MB, to go to 512 MB, should be fine. But I think you'll see a minor improvement if you go for an extra 512 MB, raising you to 768 MB total.

I have 512MB in my 12" and don't have any problems...

really in my opinion, unless you are doing something like video editing where you actually are going to be using and benifit from a large amount of ram, you don't really need more than about 512 and aren't going to really see any performance increase... since you got the 12" I am guessing that you will not be doing video editing.

I've got a PC with 1GB ram that I used to use before I got my 12" mac and now use sometimes for audio recording. It was really a waste of money for that much ram. I turned my windows virtual memory off and have yet for that 2nd 512 memory stick to kick in, even when doing audio editing/recording... again, really only with something like video editing will you see any real performance increase in a larger amount of ram.

at least this has been my experience and my opinion: you're not really gonna get any sort of performance benifit from large sizes of extra ram unless you are using most of it (video editing, software synths, or something like that). Any improvement you may see will be very small. 512 should be plenty.
