Recognizing FW & USB

	My new PB 12" will not recognize a Maxtor FW/USB One Touch 250GB external HD. The HD does not appear on the desktop when plugged into either of the USB ports or the FW port. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting power to the Maxtor. I have restarted OS-X twice. I am new to Macs, but I was assuming there should be an "OS-X has found new hardware, etc. " message anytime new hardware is plugged into a USB/FW port? The HD is functional with a Dell Inspiron. Any ideas? P.S.: Safari locks up and diplays error messages consistently.
