after searching the forums for solution, i upgraded the router with the new 5.02 firmware and my airport extreme card is at version 3.2.

I could see the router from my powerbook but i coudn't get any internet connection. When i checked back my tcp/ip setting, it gave me the 169.25.***.** address. I even tried typing the manual ip address and i still couldn't get any internet connection.

However when i tried it with the old airport card, it worked. So the problem must be the Airport Extreme Card and router.

What could be wrong? anyone with the successful connection, please help.

I know then I had problems connecting to the internet with my SMC router, I had to fill in the DNS server fields (in system prefs) that my router had connected via DSL, if they weren't already there. Once the information was entered I was able to go out to the internet.

Macs using Airport Extreme have had a lot of trouble connecting with MR814v2 routers. They connect fine with the MR814 just fine, but the v2 alienates a lot of AE computers.

I too heard the new firmware fixed this, but decided I didn't want to risk it.

I suggest Linksys.

Now i know, but it's too late. Perhaps i may return it. I took a lot of advice this weekend, but i still couldn't get my powerbook to connect to the internet with this damn router. I

My new PB12" is working fine after installing a MR814v2. The Comcast guy left an hour ago and I have been up and running for a half hour with the Netgear. I researched a lot of posts before deciding on this router- I didn't see any negatives before this post. Oh well, ignorance is bliss because my connection is flying...

i brought this router home tonight and it worked. I have no idea why it didn't work in my office, i suspect is the DNS problem because i got it working a little bit this afternoon by playing around with the DNS setting but it didn't last more than 30 seconds of surfing net.

I don't know what else can be wrong? i have a airport wireless bluetooth keyboard, and i was connecting to a desktop g4 with a first generation airport card using computer to computer network.

I had the same problem trying to get my 15" AlBook to run on it. Go to the netgear website and get the firmware upgrade for the router. That should fix your problem.
It's just an ordinary day and it's all your
state of mind, at the end of the day, you
just gotta say it's alright!

i had a netgear wgr614 router for about a day. i'd ordered a 15 1.25, and wanted the wireless router here when the powerbook arrived. well, i set the pb up, then the router. everything worked fine until i tried checking mail. it was absolutely the weirdest thing i've seen yet. with that router, i could not ping or otherwise connect to adelphia's mail server (tried to with both pc desktop and pb). i had no firewall on, and did all updates, and got nothing. no tech support could help. i got the outsourced tech support (with netgear) and i could barely understand the guys. i was on hold, then disconnected twice while they were "transferring me" to tier 2 support. returned the netgear, and got a d-link, and all has been fine since. my connection with the d-link appears to be faster as well, fwiw.

i did upgrade the firmware but it didn't work. However i found a solution afterward. Apparently, the AT&T cable modem doesn't work well with the netgear, i have to plug the netgear router into the smc router to make it work. I don't know why but hey, it is working and i am not complaining.

I have no idea if this will help at all, but I was having some weird problems with my MR814 (not v2) until I did a little hunting. I couldn't get to certain web sites. I found that the default MTU (maximum transfer unit) size on this router is 1500. However, that's a little too big. I don't know if it's a Mac thing or not. Netgear support was, as usual, useless. With a little searching, I found that changing to 1492 might help, and it does. On my router, this is under "WAN setup" in the advanced preferences. I still have trouble with a couple of web sites (altering the destination address of a package through UPS comes to mind), but everything else works fine. I don't know if this will help, but I've had absolutely no problems using Airport or Airport Extreme with this router other than this.

Thanks for your help. But i'm not sure its the mtu problem. As i said before, when i brought it home last night and surfing successfully after not working properly for 3 days in my office, i concluded that perhaps my office's AT&T modem is registering the previous router mac address and doesn't play well with the netgear router.

Can the Netgear clone the previous MAC address? Seems like most WAPs can do that nowadays...
