1st gen 17 incher makes this awful high pitched screeching noise when I'm doing lots of intensive programs (like running FCP, Photoshop and dreamweaver or something. It's the most obnoxious noise ever. Anyone experienced this and anyone have a fix?

It's a known "issue". Are you running Panther? I don't have my revision A 17 anymore, but some people have claimed that Panther fixed this noise.

The noise should disappear, or at least go down if you lower processor performance in energy saver settings, but that's hardly a "solution".

i dont get the screech but i get that sizzle noise whenever i have my 17pb plugged with the ac.

its a strange problem that i have accepted to live with because its not that bothersome. this noise just develops after some usage, because i noticed when i clean installed the OS the sound was no longer present even while the pb was plugged in.

but for some reason it always comes back, and it definitely has something to do with the ac adapter because when i take it out the noise goes away. damn sizzle

anyway back to the subject, the only time i thought the screech was an issue was with safari loading up secure sites.

I had both the Rev A and B 17". My rev B now has Panther installed and that screech had not been noticed, until today. It doesn't happen on the secure sights anymore. I just brought up Safari and came to the forums and I hear it again. I'm like WTH, I thought it was supposed to be gone with Panther.

Upon more looking, the screech is on my regular comp programs now. I opened my energy program in the system pref. and when I clicked on diff options, it would screech. This, the beachballs, slowness of my computer..... what's happening? All was so well.

My rev A 17" AlBook used to make similar sounds when under load, and quite loudly at times, but since Panther I can bearly hear it. 10.3.1 hasn't changed that (except that my fan is running a lot this evening... )

Wow, I forgot about the screech! I used to get it all the time, but since loading Panther I can't say it has happened once.

I have the "sizzle" on my 15al, sometimes its louder and sometimes its not there.

If its there it seems to be only when the PB is plugged in, I can lesson the effect by selecting the slower cpu option in the powersave.

With panther it seems louder then with Jag, maybe its just me on that note.

Similar issue, my work laptop does the same thing and its a compaq, so this issue is not just confined to PBs.

I beleive it caused by power leaking, that is RF interference leaking into and affecting the speakers. Apple hadn't shielded the speakers well enough to block it out. That's my hypothesis

No, the screeching/sizzling doesn't come from the speakers, it comes from one of the chips (not the CPU though, perhaps the video controller). If you're on a TiBook, which you can easily pop the keyboard off of, you can identify and listen to the actual chip making the noise.
