Hey all,
After getting my 15" tibook, I started to notice the fans on this powerbook. It started to get annoying - to the point where the fans would kick on and never stop unless I put the machine to sleep. I got pretty annoyed and even called Applecare (about 30 minutes ago). The fans would kick on even when I was doing lite surfing or word processing... and always when Itunes was on!
So talked with applecare - not much help, they told me to go to my local apple store.
I didn't really want to drive over to the store -- I don't know why, but I just decided to restart my machined -- I NEVER restart my powerbook -- I mean never. I always put the thing to sleep mode. I can't even remember the last time I restarted the thing (probably an osx update or something).
Anyhow, after I restarted -- wouldn't you now it, I tried to get my fans going and they wouldn't come on! I played Ituntes for about 5 minutes, opened up camino and safari and word. NOTHING. I'm posting right now from my tibook on highest performance battery setting and no fans!
I don't really have an explaination - perhaps there was some process that was running all the time that took up cpu? I have no idea - but the damn thing is just quite now! Just thought I'd post this since it *might* help someone else.

Don't worry, they will come back on again.

Okay -- after about 10 minutes of the DVD, the fans kicked on (right one only) - I let it run about 2 minutes and then stopped the DVD. And waited to see if they would stop. About 1-2 minutes later, the fans shutdown.
I dont know, but my fan situation just got a lot better -- I was considering offloading my tibook but if this holds up, I'm keeping it.

How much RAM do you have? Because if you never restarted the Ti then you must have had a lot of pageouts, which would thrash the HD. The HD is a major source of heat. Anyway, just an idea, but something you might consider if you find that after a long up-time, you start hearing the fans again.

I'm running 512 right now - I think that could be a possible reason, but I'd think garbage collection would take care of that no?? Plus, when the fans kick in, I don't necessarily hear my HD spinning. But whatever the reason, I guess no I will periodically restart or shutdown (god forbid) my tibook.
