I purchased a 17" rev A prior to them shipping. Couldn't wait to start using a Mac vs a Windows machine.
It arrived and blew my mind. It was beautiful. On top of it all, the OS was a pleasure to use, and I was having a blast learning it (sad, huh?). Shortly there after, my 1.8ghz Dell desktop started collecting dust. Aside from being used to access the occasional site that didn't like Safari (ie my banks website) the desktop was useless.
Then...My laptop started freezing up. No reason behind it. Just froze up. Picking it up, freeze. Slight move, freeze. Open certain programs, freeze. Then I start getting screen static. Half black screen, half looks like yer TV isn't hooked up to the coax cable at yer house.
No biggie, call tech support. Zap pmu, etc, etc. Then on a 3rd call to tech support and a pmu zapping. I got no airport card.

"send it in"

They replace, main logic board, keyboard and battery. 5 days later. Airport card is bye-bye again.

"send it in"

Replace MLB again. 2 weeks later. Some of the keys on my keyboard won't work. "Zap PMU." Doesn't work. But hey, there is a local aurhorize Mac shop.

"take it in"

Keyboard works great. 2 weeks later I notice (the 1st time I use it in a low-light situation) they keys "2" thru "=" do not illuminate. Nor do the "z" or "?" keys. I call Apple and tell them that I have been very patient, and have allowed them to make it right more than enough times. As a company, they have to allow for the fact that sometimes there are units that are just "born bad"

They agree (after some arm twisting. They wanted to try and fix it AGAIN) to replace it. I am please that they are willing to replace the unit, but I am unhappy that it will take 2+ weeks. I am also unhappy that this occured in the 1st place. But I Will remain optomistic that it will be resolved, and I can get back on the road to happy OS land.

Moral of the story: Get the Apple care.

PS: The tech said there is an outside chance they will have to upgrade me to the rev b since the A's may be gone. That would make me happy too

When exactly did you order this machine? The standard warranty on any Apple machine is a year. If you ordered it after the announcement in January (I believe that is when the 17" was announced and "for sale"), then your standard warranty should cover anything on the machine till next January.

The Apple care, AFAIK, does not apply to anything in the first year except phone support.

That would be sweet if they replace your machine with a rev B.

I am having battery issues with mine. Can't get more than 2 hours out of a battery.

Good luck with your Powerbook!
