Just this morning, I opened my iBook (OSX.3.1 640 Mb Ram, 700Mhz) in work from sleep, for a few seconds things were okay, then the screen went progressively brighter until it went completely white and I could see nothing. I held down the power button until it shut down, then rebooted and the screen is now completely blank ...black. The laptop seems to be starting up as normal except for the screen obviously!
I have Apple care first of all, and this is the fourth or fifth serious fault I have had in a year and a half and the 7th time it has been with Apple (had a problem that took several visits before rectified!)...
What can I try before I get onto Apple care??
Thanks very much in advance....

I was having a somewhat similar problem with Panther (I hope it's over now). My display was lacking a lot of contrast, but it started out that way once it came from sleep. It also never went black.

I tried switching between profiles which helped the first time, but the second time it didn't. I just went ahead and re-calibrated my display. If you have an external monitor around, perhaps you can try changing your ColorSync profile found under the color "tab" of the Displays control panel or creating a new profile for Jaguar.

Unfortunately I haven't a second monitor.Anyway, its not really a problem of contrast...its black-black....not a thing on the screen. Anything else I could try?

When that happened to my iBook (no increasing brightness problem, but missing video) I had to have my motherboard replaced. But that did fix the problem. Other than sending it in for repair, or using an external monitor as a work around, I don't think you can do much to fix it.
