iBook 600mhz, twin USB, about two years old, battery dead.

I think.

A quick search of the forums and it seems that the lifetime expentancy for the iBook battery is about right, but I have to be sure before I go and order a new one as it is quite a slice of it's resale value.

Could it be that the battery isn't getting any charge?

No lights whatsoever, died suddenly.

The iBook had a bit of a fall, was on the back of a bicycle that fell, was in a heavily padded bag.

Is there a way to check if the battery is indeed getting charge without finding someone with another iBook to test it out on?

Hook it up to car battery or something.

I've got your model iBook too; had exactly the same symptoms - sudden death after about five minutes use.

Try X-Charge to see if your battery is charging.

Sounds like you do indeed need a new battery.

I just had to install 10.2.8 for my battery to die.. it was relatively easy to do. But I do not recommend it

Thanks for posting the link to that utility, engaged, it took me a while to reply as I had left my adapter, as per habit, at work.

I'm still in the dark though.

The X-Charge is reading a flat 0% "Battery charge over time", so that means that the battery is either not getting charge or not accepting any charge.

mmmmmmmmm

The plot thickens.....

01:43:45: Battery installed (current charge = 0%)
01:45:04: ---System waking up... (battery charge = 0%)
01:56:48: Battery removed
I guess it would be possible that the battery might not be getting any charge from the iBook.

Will be getting the multi-tester out tonight.

I upgraded to some 10.2 release about 1/2 way through the warrenty process. The battery just up and died.

Called apple and they replaced it...it took them a month to get the battery to me (back ordered) but it's been fine since.

Just in case anyone finds this thread with a search, I thought I'd add this link...

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...03071622115360

...it's about dead batteries coming to life again after fiddling with the firmware. It didn't help me out, but it might work for someone.
