I just bought myself a headset, but the mic refuses to work. Now, I doubt it's the headset's fault, because I just went to get a replacement (brand new) and I still have the problem!

Is there a good way of determining that my line in is dead? (AluBook 1.25GHz)

Most microphones are not powered, and thus will not work in a line-in jack (which is designed for a 2V line-in signal).

Remember: it's a line-in jack (line-level signal), not a microphone jack -- no matter what Apple may label it as.
