I'm an old partitioner from MacOS 7/8 days... just got a new 12" PB - what's your take on partitioning under OSX/Panther - my HB is 60 GB (that'll be 55 GB in real life, right?)

- do I need to partition?
- what are the advantages/disadvantages?
- if I partition, what size partitions do you recommend?

Anyone care to share their own partitioning choices on a 12" PB with us?

Thanks folks!

I partitioned my 40GB to 15/25 since i'm a Windows convert, I used to have all the personal files on the second drive so it's easier when reformatting. But after 2 years of mac using, I don't see a real need for reformatting. So maybe you dont need to partition it... When it comes to new os x upgrade, I still prefer a clean install it might be handy then. So in conclusion, I'm on the same boat as you. I guess the best way is to get an external bus powered hard disk and not formatting the internal drive.

I'd like to hear more from experienced mac users. TIA!

As I always say about partitioning: if you have to ask, you shouldn't partition.

In the old days of Mac OS (8.0 and earlier) there were technical reasons for needing to partition. HFS+, introduced in 8.1, eliminated those limitations.

Now people use partitioning as forced organization. I say that anything a partition can do, a folder can do more flexibly.

PLEASE search this forum for "partitioning". This topic has been hotly debated several times in the not-too-distant past.
