how do you know if the cable going through the hinge is just starting to wear through..is there certain things that might show up like lcd flickering etc? thanks Mark

That's probably a good indicator, although not a guaranteed sign that the cable is worn thru. When it happened to me (twice) the video just died suddenly with no warning or indicator at all.

If you're suspecting this could happen to you, I'd be backing up regularly.
