Office for Mac.
AppleWorks hasn't been updated in ages.
Office is a better suit and is comptable with the popular PC version.

Office, if you do anything that requires cross-platform compatability Appleworks is almost non-functional.

Office. Good piece of software (although I only use Word really). Biggest annoyance is the lack of file-names over 31 characters, and it's a bitt sluggish at times on an iBook 500, but should be great on a G4. Try and find someone who qualifies for the academic version - will save you a load of money.

Appleworks is awesome and should meet most peoples needs, but it isnt really in the same league as Office. Since Appleworks will come for free on your iBook, why not try it out and see if it is adequate? If you are a student or educator, you can get Office for around $150. Appleworks will read Office documents, but there are features in Office that arent in Appleworks

If I remember correctly you can transfer text documents between the 2. You would have to save the document as a Rich Text Format (RTF). You don't loose much if any of the format. It's a good suite of programs for personal use but as far as compatibility goes it isn't much. My biggest dislike about the program is the way the page is displayed on the screen. It is positioned on the left side of the screen and I don't think there is a way to change it. Very annoying. It isn't a RAM hog like Office and if it were to get a real update and made compatible with Office, I would use it.
