So I just signed up for Safeware laptop insurance. They're charging me $237 for $3950 of coverage (for my AlBook, its spare battery and AC adapter, digital camera, and iPod). I figured that with me moving, stuff might get damaged, and besides that I'm moving into the city, so I suppose theft is slightly more likely. :-/

Let's hope I never have to use it!

Yeah.

Not exactly cheap, but not unreasonable, I reckon.

Its $60 / thousand declared value with no deductable per year!

I only value my computer at used replacement price, since if they can't replace it for that, I can!

Did you check with your homeowners/renters policy providers and see if they have a add-on called a "computer endorsement"? Or perhaps a "All Risk" policy... Much Much Much cheeper! If I was to add this endorsement to my renters policy then it would cost me $44.00 a year.

Most endorsements do not cover laptops away from premises on anormal basis. Stolen from car etc. is considered abnormal use!

That could be. Still worth a check, though. I'm waiting for my PB (in the next couple weeks, hopefully), and checked with my insurance agent. They have an "all risk" policy that covers everything (with no deductible) for approximately $1 per $100 of coverage per year.

I am with USAA and spoke with the Agent. I actually have a "All Risk" policy... If I break it they replace it... If its stolen, they replace it... If I run into a light pole and bend my PB in half they replace it... Anytime , anywhere... Same rules apply for a computer endorsement from USAA.

It can't hurt to check...

Just trying to save you guys a buck or two...
