It takes around 11 minutes to copy a full 700mb onto my 4200rpm hardrive. Is this right. It seems really slow. My 4 year old fujitsu lifebook does it in half the time.

I've noticed this also. It seems the drive will only read the CD/DVD at the speed it was burned at. Try burning a CD at full speed, then read it in.

yeah you were right. i burnt a file at 16x and it copied the file onto the hard drive in 3 mins or so
