I received my 12" iBook G4 yesterday. Yes, there was much fanfare. I was more than pleasantly surprised when I found out that there were literally tons of software that had been pre-installed with Panther: Adobe Photoshop 7.0/Illustrator 10, Cinema Tools, Deimos Rising, Final Cut Pro (!), Macromedia Dreamweaver MX/Fireworks MX/Flash MX/Freehand MX, Microsoft Office X, Roxio Toast 6 Titanium, Sound Studio, Soundtrack and World Book Encyclopedia.

Acc. to the Apple site the ff. software are bundled with the iBook G4: Deimos Rising, Appleworks, Sound Studio and World Book nEncyclopedia. But it makes no mention of the other applications I listed above. Are these software apps simply DEMO versions, or are they the real thing? I tried calling the reseller I bought my iBook from to ask (I live in the Philippines), but the sales rep was vague. She just something like - "yes, they're all real." I think she had no idea what I was talking about.

Thanks.

I think most of them are demo versions. I'd have to check on my own iBook to be certain about some of the apps on the list, but I know for a fact the preinstalled MS Office is a demo. In fact, you have to be careful to uninstall it before installing the real thing. And I really doubt that Adobe is just giving away copies of Photoshop....

Some of the applications you're referencing are demo version only -- they'll expire in 30 days I believe once you active them. At least, that was the case with my new G4 iBook

Did you purchase retail, or did you buy from a 3rd party?

I think those apps not listed in Apple that are installed on your iBook may be demo apps.

If not, they might be installed on your iBook without a legal software licence

Just my thoughts.

Sounds like someone loaded your new iBook with warez. I would look into it to see if it's legit.

It does indeed sound like illegitimate software. While the new iBooks do come with several demos and full apps, Dreamweaver, the Adobe apps, etc. should simply not be on there. Very odd.
My opinions are my own, and not those of anybody else, including my employer.

I bought it from a local Apple reseller here in Manila.

Could you name the specific applications that expired 30 days after you activated them? Is this Roxio Toast Titanium, Cinema Tools and Soundtrack?

How do I check the legitimacy of the Adobe/Macromedia/FCP apps on my iBook G4?

Thanks.

Open the application(s) and open the 'About XX" dialog. You should see who it's licensed to. It should probably say something about 'Demo' if it's just a 30-day trial. If not, someone gave you an interesting 'present'.

Hmm... an Apple reseller in Manila. I'd say they gave you some extra apps for free.

If it's demo software, you should be prompted to agree to the licensing terms and 30 days (at least, thats what it does for me on the Microsoft Office demo on my new iBook). Also, several of the apps you mention don't come preloaded on new iBooks (e.g. the Macromedia apps).

On the "About" window, I notice two things: one, it doesn't say DEMO, and two, in the "licensed to:" there's no name (mine), but it has a registration number.

Now, I tried registering Adobe Photoshop 7 by clicking on the "Help>Registration" button. This is what I got: 'Error: We are having difficulty validating your serial number. Please verify that you have entered it correctly, then contact us.'

Wah! Is this warez?

As an alternative to the warez theory, I have a feeling this may have been a display model. Stores often install a lot of cool software to impress customers.
