So its my first day using my new iBook G4, and yep, its my first Apple as well. i am VERY surprised with the fit and finish of the iBook. the experience of unpacking was much better than my Toshiba Portege, that was over 1000 more than the iBook.
but there are a few blunders with my ibook.
1. i cannot play CD's or VCD...what's up with that? but i CAN play DVD's.
2. when i downloaded the Mac OS-X update 10.3.1, i could not open it, it said it had a Mounting problem. what does that mean? Same thing happened with i downloaded Mozilla 1.5 BUT, when i first installed ICQ, that did not happen. why's that?
3. a little thing, but my keyboard is bouncy near the center, where the 567 keys are...i'm guessing that's because there is no clip there to keep it in place..
but overall, very nice machine. does anyone know how to fix this "mounting" problem, or the CD-VCD playing problem?
thx,
Juke

You probably got a bad download. Try it again, that happens from time to time.
The keyboard, try opening the clips and lifting up the keyboard, look and see if there is anything amiss with airport wire. sometimes re-seating the ketboard will take care of it. The ibook keyboards are kind of touchy sometimes.

Open up System Preferences (under the apple menu) and open CD's & DVD's - use the pop-up menus to tell your computer what to do when you insert a blank or music CD (I'm assuming this is still much the same under 10.3) Also, your drive may be bung. I got sold a brand new iMac with a bung optical drive and had to take it back for replacement.
i could not open it, it said it had a Mounting problem. what does that mean?
It sounds like you have a problem either with permissions or Disk Utility. Open Disk Utility select your hard drive then go First Aid then Repair Permissions. Try opening these files again. If this does not work open Console in /Applications/Utilities/ sweep the log and then try mounting the file. A log should appear in console. Copy and paste that log back here.

The proper method to solving this problem (audio CDs not mounting, disk images not mounting) as an archive and install of OS X 10.3 Panther using your Panther Install Discs. You could also try running through your set of restore discs, which may solve the issue, but will wipe all data from the hard drive.
This is a software problem, something got messed when Panther was installed on the machine. A total reinstallation of Panther has been shown to solve the problem.
Remember that if you archive and install Panther _without_ preserving User Data and Network Settings (and you would NOT want to preserve that stuff, as it may contain the problem), you will have an archived backup of the original system, and your original users folder. This will take up room on your hard drive, so you will want to wipe it.
Make sure to burn all your personal data to CD before doing the archive and install!

I remember reading in these forums about that very same audio CD problem. It seems to stem from the archive & install method in Panther. It seems rather odd that it would ship that way though. I would try a re-installation of Panther from your discs before taking it into an Apple store. best of luck-
The mounting issue could be a bad download or permissions.

Actually, i reinstalled Panther last night, without saving any of my data, brand new disk. it works now, audio cd's play and dvd's play just as well. and no more mounting problems. but i'm a little dissapointed that a new iBook would do this.
but CAN Macs play VCD's??? i tried opening it with the DVD software, and it said it would not open. what gives....
