Fellows,
since late 2001 I had my iBook 600, fitted with a 15GB IBM HD.
I recently installed OS 10.2 and did the combo update and and I think another up-date until finaly getting to 10.2.8.
A few weeks later however, I started hearing the very scary clicking-clacking-scratching noise that seems to come from the HD, which was described before. It is noe the sound related to sound settings/speakers I read about, but really seems to do with the HD. As in the case of some other postings here and elsewhere, the spinning beach ball started to spin and after some time the systedm froze, requiering restart. Restart too failed at times as no hard disk was detected. Booting with OSX CD did not show the hard disk either.
It was suggested that the HD is simply gone and would need to be replaced.
But behold! Booting from OS9 CD and then setting start-up frive to OS9 works fine [at least so far]. In OS9 mode I hear no clikcing-clacking noise, the sytem does not freeze and it recognises the also the 10.2 as a start-up disk. I can also access files stored under OSX.
This is all independent of whether it runs on battery or not.
So, if the HD would be physically damaged, why can I still boot from it on OS9 withour no hitch, but when trying to boot from OSX the HD clicks and scratches as if it wants to get out and the system does not detect it at all.
Some puzzelment. Any suggestions?
