My powerbook rev A 17" 1 Ghz (OSX3) is acting really funny :

just about every time I want the computer to perform a task, like clicking something within MS Word, it hesistates, I hear a sound that sounds like "Pt" and the rainbow colored ball (from hell!) starts circling, then after a second of dumb circling, the computer performs the action.

Of course you understand this is terrible. The machine runs fine, but the "Pt"-sound is irritating. It did this before I installed X.3 already, and is getting more frequent I guess (though it could also irritate me more)

I'm pretty sure that there are loads of other threads on this... it will be well worth a search.

I think it may be to do with the sound channel shutting down when the machine is not 'in use', and then reactivating itself when you need the machine to perform an action...

I think that a fix was posted a while back.

Peace,

TPC

that DEFINITELY sounds like the sound-going-to-sleep issue that rev A 12" and 17" Powerbooks ran into. There is a 3d party app that should correct the problem at this site...

Wouldn't hurt to repair permissions either...

thank you very very much for your answer. I really had no clue what query to type in "search", so that last link really saved me. I'll download it tomorrow at my family's house, as I have no internet home.

I wish Apple would just give us the option to turn that off in System Preferences or something. At least disable it when the computer is plugged in. I'm generally using external speakers or headphones, so it's not much of a problem, but on the few ocassions where I've been caught with neither, it irritates the bejeezus out of me.
