Thanks to all who responded. Things are definitely looking up.
1) The slow system was improved by changing the Energy Saver system preference to Highest Performance.
3) According to Apple, some of my newly installed fonts were probably corrupted, thus causing Safari to stall. Getting rid of them fixed that problem.
2) My internet connection on the G4-- dsl with Airport Extreme -- is still running slower than on the original clamshell with the old Airport card (ranging from about 35-75 KBps on the G4 as compared to 60-110 KBps for the clamshell (testing with McAfee Speedometer with the computers right next to each other, about 50 feet from the base station). The G4 also has fewer "reception bars." Any ideas?
original message:
I just got a 14" G4 ibook from MacConnection. (I ordered it on a Friday and it arrived on Monday!). But I'm having some troubles:
1) System seems slow in general--there's a noticeable lagtime when opening any application. MacConnection gave me 512 MBs of RAM, bringing the machine up to 640, so how could it seem slower than a 300 Mhz G3 with only 128 of RAM?
2) Internet connection is particularly slow, and airport reception (dsl connection) is bad. My original clamshell iBook has a longer range and is consistently faster (using McAfee Speedometer) than the new machine. I switched to channel 1 and checked the airport card installation, but the old tangerine is still much faster.
3) Safari isn't loading pages. This is a new development as of the past hour or so. The last thing I did was download a bunch of fonts from my iDisk to my iBook, and install my Canon scanner software, neither of which I'd expect to cause a conflict with Safari.
Perhaps I'm just lucky, but I've never had to service a Mac before so I'm a little at a loss. Since it's brand new, I have Apple phone support; am I better off calling them or taking it to TekServe or something (I'm in NYC).
Plus, is it just me, or is the keyboard really loud?
Thanks all.

I would go throught the basics first. Take the RAM module out see how it runs. Repair permissions and see if that helps. If nobody has a better idea, do a full reinstall of the OS if all else fails.

pessoa,
I've up/kind of downgraded from the Powerbook Titanium 667 Mhz DVI (768 mb RAM/30G HD) to my new 12" iBook G4 800Hmz (640 mb RAM/30G HD). I've had my unit for a week, and the only weird thing about it is that sometimes it doesn't recognize my USB mouse, but that's alright. Compared to my old Tibook, the bus and internet speed is just as fast, at times even faster, on my iBook.
I'd say you have to have that checked.

I feel kinda like it might be Panther (or maybe just the update). The open/save dialogs are slow as molasses in some programs. The same, at times, with mounted network volumes. Safari is kinda slow. And some connections have seemed slower than usual, although that could be individual sites or Internet traffic.
(Then again, maybe it's just Mozilla using a lot of resources.)

I'd do what disco said and clean install Panther (erase and install). If this doesn't help, run Apple hardware test. Good luck.
