I have an iBook 700 with CD-ROM. It has been clicking for the past few days. It sounds like the laser is clicking back and forth. When I open it and re-close the sound goes away. After a while the sound just comes back. It reads CD's just fine and is clean. Anybody else having this problem or has anyone heard about it? The sound is very faint but enough to drive me crazy.

Does it click when there's a CD in?
Are you sure it's not the hard drive?
If it's the CDROM you'll probably have to send it back to Apple to replace. Still under warranty?

I haven't heard the sound while a CD is in the drive. I will have to do a better check that way. I've listened to it while the clicking is going on and it is definately coming from the CD drive. When I listen to the area of the hard drive I can tell that the sound isn't coming from it. I did a test to see if the sound would happen with the drive ejected. I kept it going for almost 2.5 hours ejected and the sound didn't show up at all. Then I put the drive back in and a few minutes later the clicking started.

It is still under warranty. I have almost 2 1/2 years left so that is a good thing. If the CD-ROM needs replaced do you think Apple would upgrade it to a Combo if I paid the difference? I say not but it would be cool if they would

Sounds like the CDROM. If you have applecare, call them up and see if they'll give you a combo. Never hurts to ask. Good luck.

My last iBook used to have this exact same problem. I lived with it, but eventually the drive had problems mounting and reading CDs. I agree that the ticking is annoying, and since the drive is likely to fail anyway, you might as well get it replaced now.
