I am going to buy a powerbook G4 in about a week or two.

Here is what I am going to get:
1Ghz 12inch Powerbook
512 or 768MB Ram
80GB Harddrive
Air port extreme + Bluetooth
Combo Drive

Brenthaven Shoulder Bag
Bluetooth Wireless KB and Mouse
Extra Batt?

Any Suggestions?
I have a $2,000 MAX Limit, for everthing including a case. I just can't afford the 15in. This PB won't be my complete desktop replacement but I expect to do about 50% of my work on it.

I have been a Long Time PC User and just bought a 400Mhz "Sawtooth" G4 about 4 months ago. Since then I have upgraded the ram to 512, hard drive from a 20GB to a 30GB and, put a 1.3Ghz G4 Accerator chip in it and, a Radeon 8500. I am happy with the speed. Can I expect the 1Ghz Power book to be close in speed to the Desktop I have? I understand the 12in PB lacks the 2MB L3 that my desktop has and is 300Mhz slower but Should it be some where neer the same speed. I don't use Photoshop that much.

Thanks in advance!

Good choice. I ordered the same configuration (I'll add some more memory later) and it should arrive ... tomorrow !

You may want to consider a Mini DVI to video adaptor if you want to connect your Powerbook to a TV or a video projector or a DVI to ADC to connect an Apple flatpannel. I heard the best comments about the 12" PB !

Good choice on the 12 inch...mine works great as a desktop replacement. I would think the speed would be better on the PB due to faster bus speed, more RAM, etc. Good luck with your purchase.

Thanks for the info, I have the video adaptor on my order also. I would love the 15inch but the problems they have been having and then extra price is too much. I plan to buy a 20inch Display with the Tax returns come back in feb 2k4 He he LOL!

Thanks CS. I have an iCurve at home. It's basically a laptop stand. The keyboard is angled for easier typing and it keeps the screen elevated for better viewing. I like it better than the Lapvantage stand that I have.

Here's photo with my PB 17 on the iCurve

Don't mind the set-up right now. It's a temporary solution until we move into our new place next year.

Hi, bovie

I have a PowerMac G4/400 myself, with 1GB of RAM, Radeon 8500, and a couple of 7200-rpm HDDs.

In terms of processing power, the PowerBook G4/12" will definitely speed up most of your tasks. Perhaps the only places where your PowerBook will be "at par" with your Mac is with regards to games and disk-intensive tasks. For everything else, your PowerBook should be "snappier."

I recently tried out an iBook 800, and I found it faster than my Mac in the basic stuff I do -- file management with the Finder, iTunes and iCal, document typesetting, browsing the web, and so on. Warcraft III gameplay is about the same though, thanks to the powerful Radeon 8500. As for disk-intensive tasks, well, I do a lot of file transfers across hard drives, and so my PowerMac definitely edges the iBook/PowerBook.

I think you'll be a happy camper with the PowerBook. It is one sweet machine.

Thanks for the advice people.
