Finally after a month waiting anxiously...
First feeling: the thing was cold... (it is cold here in Porto...)
How can we avoid to be so childish with such a thing...

Well, unfortunately my students do not care if I have a new PB or not, so I must suspend the contemplation until evening...

I need an urgent help: how do I know the mac address of the ethernet interface? I need that to connect it to the faculty network.

Thanks in advance.

PS. The black thing (Panther) was in the box...

I will report here my phenomological experiences with it... :-)

Congrats on the PB! You can get your MAC addresses for Ethernet and AirPort by going to About This Mac -> More Info (which opens Apple System Profiler) and looking under Network.

I joined the Powerbook community on Sunday. Purchased a 12" 1ghz Combo, 40gig, AE at the Apple store in Valley Fair. Added 512ram and it's flying. The memory cover screws...argh what an experience finding a suitable screwdriver. No bad pixels which was my main concern. The front right has the little gap here and there but that's not an issue. It lies flat on the desk at work but wobbles at home. Connects fine with my Linksys G access point and range is great. It came with Jaguar with the Panther cd's in the box. This is my 2nd Mac, the first was a summer 2000 iMac.

Congrats to all the new 12" owners. Great machine. It has it's quirks just like everything else, but we don't have the white spots like the 15. If you can handle the smaller screen, I think the 12 is the best powerbook out there.

Open System Preferences. Click "Network" and you can find the MAC address under the "Ethernet" tab.

Thanks for your support.
The machine is already flying with panter. I am currently strugling with X11 and openoffice in order to use the right fonts and keyboard mapping. I am not able to make apple fonts available to openoffice neither the dead keys (portuguese).
I wil post a picture of the beauty soon.

Is there anythings similar to hibernation in macosx? Yesterday I let the battery run completely out and I was used to the automatic hibernation of windows XP...

Congrats on your new PowerBook!
I'm glad to see that the Portuguese mac community is growing.

I bought my 12" Powerbook in Lisbon a couple of weeks ago but mine didn't come with Panther.

As far as I can tell there is no hibernation in OS X.

asoares, there is no hibernation in Mac OS X. Normally, when the PowerBook sleeps, it will lower the power 1% each hour, so it should be able to sleep for 4 days before shutting down completely. How can you not use the beautiful PowerBook for 4 days?

BTW, booting OS X is less then a minute which is about the same time you bring back your Windows box from hibernation. So I would just put it to sleep.
