Hey guys,

Yesterday i got my ibook g4 - spanish keyboard - 30 gb - 12inch - 640mb

I`m switching ... pc to mac
... best choice ever made!!!

I just got a couple of question for those mac users.

- good replacemment for trillian (i use msn messenger and icq)
- tried to install proteus and messenger and in both> "mount failed" any ideas?
- a good mac p2p like overnet
- does panther recognize ntfs to have my pc and mac connected ???
- how does virtualpc handle hard appz like 3dsmax, solidworks, rhino
- i use BAT as my main mail client in my pc, can i transfer my mail to my ibook`s MAIL??
- a good ftp for mac

If mounting a disk image failed, you may want to see if mounting an audio CD also fails. If so, there is a corrupt pref file -- someone found the specific one I believe, it would be located in ~/Library/Preferences (~ being your Home directory).

Enjoy the machine! My 12" G4 800 is simply the nicest machine I've ever used -- I'm in love!

A good multi-protocol IM client is Fire. Get it here:

http://fire.sourceforge.net/

It's quite nice, and free to boot.

For p2p stuff, I'd recommend the following:

1) Acquisition - http://www.acquisitionx.com/ -- a really nice shareware Gnutella client

2) Poisoned -- http://www.poisonedproject.com/ -- a nice front-end to the FastTrack network (Kazaa, Grokster, iMesh), the Gnutella network (Limewire, Acquisition), and OpenFT.

Right now there's Proteus and Fire (search versiontracker.com or macupdate.com), but when Adium 2 comes out, I'd recommend it.

THANX for your support, any ideas about this "mount error" ????

I just turn on my ibook for the first time... it updated itunes, isync and macosx.
Then i downloaded and tried to install messenger and proteus, and i get this mount error when trying to install.

Any ideas??? ... i`m a total mac newbie!

You obviously didn't read my tip. See if audio CDs also fail to mount. If they also fail, you are experiencing a bug that others have reported. An archive and install (WITHOUT preserving user data and network settings) would fix the problem, as would trashing the problematic preference file. Others have claimed to find the file that causes the issue, look through the iBook forum here, and at discussions.info.apple.com for the solution. Or call AppleCare, you should have 90 days of free phone support, at least if you bought the machine in the USA.

Hi, i had read your post, unfrtunatelly i haven`t had the chance to test a cd audio.

I have tested now and you were absolutelly right... nothing happens when an audio cd is inserted... i have browsed this directory.. but i don`t know wich file is the one that i gotta thrash.

It was this file:

~/Library/Preferences/CD Info.cidb

(That means go to your home folder, then into Library, then Preferences, and find the file called CD Info.cidb, in case you don't know.)

Take that CD Info.cidb file, and drag it to your Desktop.

Reboot. See if the problem goes away. And if it does, please post back in this thread to confirm that it works. If not, I can tell you how to do an Archive and Install, and what it means for your files.

Go to www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com to find all sorts of freeware/shareware apps you might need (IM, FTP, P2P, and so on).

mmm, that seems to be the problem, this file is NOT in my system

... searched everything, including the mentioned folder and no results.

Hi Carloncho!

Welcome to the club! I'm a fellow switcher. I got my ibook last saturday (a lowly g3 700)... so I'm sorry I can't be more informative, I'm just trying to figure all this out myself... its fairly easy, but there's still a learning curve.

ok done, I have posted the bug fix in a new post, tnx for the support!

So i continue to set everything... now the span hack... i downloaded the screen spanning hack, decompress it, and double clicked the "Screen Spanning Doctor v0.2.app" file and nothing happened, i cannot see the arrange aditional tab in the displays preferences.

I`m doing that with the external crt monitor plugged.

Again... any ideas

A window should come up asking if you want to apply the hack, remove the hack, or quit (I think). Did you see that?

mmm nope i didn`t see a thing, nothing happens when i double click it, the icon is animated but... nothing else.

OK solved... the thing was that i was uncompressing the file with expander, so the hack file was taking like TXT. So i just did the same thing tith stuffit 8.0.1 and it worked.
