This bug was caused by the 10.3.1 panther update.

ISSUES:

* Audio CD not detected
* Errors trying to mount any dmg image


The only thing that worked for me was reinstalling the panther update but... how ????

If the system didn´t let me mount images???

I had to burn the .dmg file update and then re-installed the 10.3.1 panther update .pkg from the cd i just burn.

I had tried everything was sugestted below and this was the only fix that worked

This fix did not work on my new G5, which also has the dmg mounting problem.

I had the same problem after I did the update, ended up calling Apple support and told me to do some kind of system restore w/ the CDs that came w/ my iBook G4 (sorry I'm a NooB so I don't exactly reemember the procedure they had do), after that I did the system update and everything is working fine now.

Hi,

This is a known issue with "earlier" 10.3.1 updates. The easy remedy that I saw in the Apple.com ibook G4 forum listed the following solution:

1. Go to System/Library/Caches .... trash the folder com.apple.kernelcaches

2. Go back to System/Library ... trash the file Extensions.kextcache

3. Restart.

I do have version 10.3.1 but do not have this problem. But I just got my new ibook g4 last week and Apple might have had fixed this version of 10.3.1.
