I have a 867 PB G4 12". The day i received it the ethernet port did not work at all. originally it shipped with 10.2.8. i ran the hardware test cd and it said there were no problems. i thought maybe it might just be some weird system intall so when i received panther i installed it only to find the same problem. when i run ifconfig -a this is what i get for the ethernet connection:

en0: flags=8822<BROADCAST,SMART,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
tunnel inet -->
ether 00:0a:95:e3:10:46

when i plug media into it, it shows the media type and then says the port is inactive. when i got to activate it in the system preferences it shows that it is already enabled and activated.

basically i have no clue whats happening. i cannot get anything to work on the ethernet conenction whther it be at home, at work, or anywhere else. luckily i use airport at work and home so i am able to get a connection but when there is none available i'm up the creek without a paddle.

anyone else having these problems?

Have you checked the cable. The ifconfig should show as active and the negotiated speed, it only shows as active if it detects the ethernet signals. If the cable it's fully home or a bad cable then the port doesn't get the signals to make it active.

I've found a couple of bad cables this way.

either that or the jack could improperly mounted to the motherboard, bad solder perhaps, thus causing what would be a bad cable
