i've sent my ibook in for repairs 3 times now. and it's been botched each time. before the last time i sent it in, the rep told me if i have another issue after it gets repaired, i should insist on a complete replacement next time.

for those of you who have successfully gotten a replacement, do you have any advice on how to proceed? what to say? what to expect? etc

here's a synopsis of my problems:

1) graphics chip died, erratic video. fixed.

2) shortly after i received my ibook back with the new mobo, the sound started to not work sometimes. line-out jack, internal speakers, and internal microphone... all dead until i restarted the ibook.

this went in and out for a couple weeks, then finally got to the point where they were dead 24/7. after HOURS of troubleshooting, and no less than 3 complete erase and installs, the rep determined that something on my motherboard was malfunctioning and i sent it in for repacement.

got it back, and the repair sheet said "reconnected speaker cord". i booted up, and it didn't work! what kind of quality control is this?

3) so i called back, yet again, and insisted on a mobo replacement... the rep assured me that he put in in the system for a replacement motherboard. when i got it back... to add insult to injury, it again said "reconnect speaker cord"... AND they had 10.1.2 on it (i had 10.3 when i sent it in)... so i had to put 10.3 back on there, and still no built-in sound input or output (FYI: it works fine with USB audio like a griffin iMic).

and now, i have another problem where on one of the usb ports, if i plug my iMic into it, the sound output is staticky. the other port is crystal clear.

ok so what the hell.. i've had enough with this. i've owned 8 macs over the years and never had to make a repair on a single one... until now. i feel like at this point, with all that i've been through, and their apparent inability to provide customer service... i deserve a complete replacement.

i mean, if i send it in again it will be the 4th time in less than 3 months... and the 3rd time for a single issue... plus a new issue (static audio on one usb port). this is not acceptable to me!

help? advice?

I think you should speak to a manger or supervisor, give your case numbers for each repair case and let them that these repairs is hindering your job and/or schooling and ask them if you can please can get your iBook replaced.

You may want to try speaking with customer relations, as opposed to support itself. Just ask to speak with them, and very politely tell them exactly what you need to see to be satisfied. Be realistic. Sounds like this has indeed been inconvenient for you -- emphasize that, but remember that the individual you're speaking with had nothing to do with the problems.
My opinions are my own, and not those of anybody else, including my employer.

yeah, i guess i should also have mentioned it has been doubly inconvenient because i mainly use the ibook for 2-track audio editing. so no sound i/o means it's pretty much useless without the griffin iMic!

thanks for the advice.

good news!

i just spoke with apple customer relations, and explained to them about all the repairs this book has been through. they said at this point i deserved a replacement -- so now i'm all set up for an 800mhz g4 ibook.

happy happy!
