I have the Hitachi 4200rpm hard drive.
Are there any other brands of 80gb 4200rpm hard drives Apple uses in the 17" Powerbook?

Recently I went on a HDD inspection spree, I found two 17 inch PowerBooks, new models, to have Fujitsu drives, I know PowerBooks don't vary from region to region however this is in Australia. Both were stock models.

Apple uses all the drives mentioned above except the 7200 RPM one.

Quoting http://barefeats.com

"The optional Hitachi 5K80 5400prm offered on the Apple Online Store does give an overall 22% gain over the standard factory Fujitsu MHT-AT drive but only a 7% gain over the Hitachi 80GN factory drive. You'll have to decide if it's worth $125 more."

They don't said in which aspects hitachi beats fujitsu, just that....

Anyone knows more about the difference between these two

That's funny. To further the problem and the decision, you don't know which factory installed drive you're going to get...if you go with the standard. Some get one, some get the other.

The only way will be open the 17" boxes in a store, start them until you find the HD you prefer....

It's the same on 1.25 15" models, which use the same HD...

I only want to know if this means something really important when you talk about performance, or it's just b***s***

someone?

I think it's BS, but those who have the faster drives seem to swear it isn't.

Drive performance is only a portion of the overall speed of a system. Application launch speed is not important to me. Other things though, such as caching levels of undos in Photoshop would be affected by disk speed and might be noticable. I'm perfectly happy with the speed of my new PowerBook with its stock 4200 rpm drive. I don't do a lot of disk intensive work though so my opinion may not count.

Your post sounds realistic and not very emotional, that counts for something.

I am on a 4200 RPM Fujistu and perfectly happy, overall the 17" 1.33 is performing very, very well.
