tree failure on HD - how do I back up?

My iBook 12-800 krashed big time.
hard ware test CD went OK
was hard to restart on Install CD and then krashed during install OS10.2
Now missing OS but mounts as FireWire on other Mac with tree and ilinks or some stuff like that that are broken of fkd up...

I would like to backup my files anyway before I initialze the all stuff..

HELP!!!!!

If the drive will mount as a firewire drive, see if DiskWarrior can repair the directory enough that you can get your files back. But with you trying to install the OS, I think you may be SOL...

did not do it yet but will try soon.
I went to the apple resailer down town and one of the apple guy told me that he had the same problem : he had one of his HD dead in his DeskTop G4 and the machine would not reboot on CD so he told me to try on a OS 9.2-3 CD...
I dont know where to find that, yet..

I m afraid that my HD is DEAD anyway..

For the ones interested, I ll post the end of this story:
The HD was defective, but a OS 9.2 CD boot allows to mount and repair most of the nods. Then, a Disk Warrior boot allowed to backup most of the data on another drive.
Apple chainged the HD and I bought a LaCie 160GB FW HD for my BackUp.

... et voila!
