Hey folks:
I've got a Pismo G3 400 that I want to install Panther on. I've got the misfortune of having one of those drives that won't read CDs anymore, but will read DVDs. Can I fire up the Pismo in Firewire target disc mode and run the installer from another computer, in this case my iMac? I want to zero out the Pismo to kill off my OS9 partition, so the install is going to be the full monty. Any help is appreciated on this front.

I had to do a CD install of jaguar on my pismo and I couldn't use firewire target disk as it turns out. However, I did find that I could boot off of an Iomega external CDRW drive just by doing set startup volume. My QPS drive didn't serve the same purpose, but ask around for friends with external CD drives and try a few. (That is, don't give up hope if it doesn't work right away) BTW: Apple doesn't support external install, but that didn't seem to matter in my case.

I have this exact same setup and dilemna. I have a 400 MHz Pismo with a borked DVD drive (but mine won't read anything).
I installed Panthwire via Firewire TDM from a dual 867-MHz Quicksilver G4 with NO problems at all. You can mount your laptop hard drive right on the desktop and do whatever you want to it.

by the way,
to get the firewire disk mode, turn on the pismo lappy. Then hold the T key immediaedly. Hold until you see the firewire logo bouncing on the screen. Then plug it in to the computer that will install panther

Hey gang:
Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to try to run the installer on my iMac tonight, targeting, via firewire disk mode, the Powerbook. I was monkeying around with the installer last night, and noticed that if you want to run it, the program does seem to force you to boot up via the disk first. I guess after that point the Pismo drive would just show up as an available hard drive. I'll let you all know how it went. I'm also trying to reformat the drive to kill off my old OS9 partition. It will be interesting...

this just worked with the first cd. you must just install the main system. do not check applications like ical, itunes... do not chek bsd-subsystem. just the plain system.
after the plain install you can rip the installers from cd 2 and cd 3 via network to your broken pismo. these packages can be installed from harddisk.
it worked with my old pismo...

Well, got home last night. Hooked the Pismo up the iMac in target disk mode. Rebooted the iMac under the OSX installer. Once the iMac booted up, I launched the disk ultility to repartition the 10 gig drive to kill off my 1 gig OS 9 partition. Then, I turned to the installer, followed the steps, and started the install on the Pismo drive with no problem.
Half the way through, the install seemed to hang up on something involving package 2, or something like that. This went on for like 45 minutes, so I quit the install, reformatted the drive again, and began the process over again. This time, no problems.
When the installer got to the point where it needed the second disk, it caused the iMac to reboot, but it came back up off the CD, with the installer running, asking for disk 2. I gave it what it wanted, and everything finished without a hitch. It's pretty sweet having it all done now, and Panther, so far, it a lot smoother than Jag. Mission accomplished.
At some point I'm going to do the iMac, but I've got all this music creation software with ugly authorization issues, so I'm sort of dreading that whole process.
