I want to install Panther in my Ibook, but it has a broken cd-rom. I do have a 2X Iomega burner. I have tried installing through the burner but not have had success.
Is there a way for me to install it through a different burner or a cross over link or through some something else?
I would welcome any ideas on this.
cheers,
Michelle

Unless there is a hack, you won't be able to install with an external drive. At least you couldn't do it with Jaguar.

What you could do, is if you had another mac, put the 10.3 CD in the mac with a working CD drive. Set the iBook to target disk mode, and plug it in. Boot the mac with the CD in it into the Panther Install. When it comes time to select the hard drive, select your iBook's hard drive and install.
It worked for me when my iBook's drive was nutty and I wanted to install Jaguar.

Firewire Target Disk Mode seems to be best candidate. Another option, though admittedly tricikier, involves NetBooting, but that requires Mac OS X Server at the very least, and another Mac no less.

Restart it and hold down the "T" key until you see the FireWire icon. After this you can connect it to or start up the "host" mac.

Oh.... however, can I use a crox over cable or do I need a Firewhire cable?

I simply want to start enjoying Panther...
is that too much to ask? I didn't think so.
I really do apreciate all the help.
Now, again, can I use a crox over cable or do I have get a firewire?

You will need a firewire cable that connects two Macs. A cross-over network cable will not work.

I managed this with Jag on an iMac with a broken CD. I discovered I couldn't boot from an external USB CDR but I could from an external FireWire CDR.
