Each time I insert a blank CD-R into my CD-RW it spins and then spits it out..... giving me "burning the disc cannot proceed because the start-up disk is full. Error code -34". It works fine if I insert an audio disk.

Thanks in advance.

In order to burn a disc, the Mac will first make a disc image, which is basically a "virtual disc" on your hard drive. When you burn a CD, it just copies this "disc" from the hard drive to the CD. You therefore need at least 650MB (.65 GB) of free hard drive space.
If you're using Mac OS X, you should always try to keep at least a few hundred MB free anyway, to ensure that the system can operate properly.

That's cutting it awfully close, then. Maybe try Toast from www.roxio.com
Since it doesn't use the disc image method of burning, you should be OK with the lack of HD space.
I would also recommend more RAM, as that would free up some more hard drive space that's being used by the system for Virtual Memory. Try www.dealram.com or www.ramseeker.com . You can get a 512MB stick for probably under $70-$80.
