I have a new iBook G4 800 and a Cube G4. Both running Panther.
When setting up my new iBook, I needed to download some large files from my Cube G4. I connect by SAMBA. When downloading large files, the download is extremely slow. Also the GUI/finder freeze up completely. Often a restart of finder will not solve the problem. What happens is that the download just stops and everything freezes.
If one download is on ist way and I start a download number two, same thing happens. I have tried both over Airport and cabled network. Makes no difference, slow transfer rate and freezeup..
I have also tried moving files with the Finder FTP. Exactly the same result. Slow and freezeups. The Finder FTP and SMB implementations seems totally useless.
Only thing that works is Fetch FTP. Good speed (as one could expect on 100 mbit network) and no freezes.
Am I the only one with this problem? Any fixes or workarounds? share your experiences.

Have you considered AppleTalk based file sharing? You can turn on AppleTalk by clicking in the "Make AppleTalk Active" checkbox on the proper network interface (AirPort, Ethernet, etc) under the "AppleTalk" pane.
Then, from the Sharing control panel, in the "Services" pane, click the "Personal File Sharing" checkbox.
To find the other Mac (if it doesn't show up automatically from the Finder's Connect menu, you can enter the IP address of the Mac you're trying to connect to.
The Finder cannot write to FTP shares. As for the SAMBA issues, perhaps SAMBA works best when used with Windows and not with another mac.

Ooh! Just recalled something, there's a utility called Directory Access in the Applications/Utilities folder. It has some settings that control AppleTalk and SMB.

Yep, Appletalk works without locking the Finder. Still, conclusion is that SAMBA and FTP in Finder is flakey in Panther.

Well, Apple did make AppleTalk, so it better work. Glad you got that working.
