So I need to get a new computer and I'm wondering if I should go for the 15 in Ti (1 ghz/60/512/superdrive) or the 15 in Al (1 ghz/60/256/combodrive). They're similarly priced, but the Al's got FireWire 800 and built-in bluetooth, faster RAM, worse cache, etc. Not to mention the screen issues. Unfortunately, I can't wait for the Rev. B Al, as my old computer died, so I've got to replace it ASAP. Any advice?

Yeah that does suck about the smaller cache. Get the Aluminum anyway is my advice.

I got a 15'' 1GHz about a month ago and bought some third party RAM and haven't had any problems as of yet.
The smaller cache actually doesn't hurt system performance. The increase in L2 cache actually keeps system performance about on par, plus you have to factor in the faster RAM and all. Furthermore, the keyboard on the aluminum, at least in my opinion, is a lot better than that on the Tibook.
I would go for the aluminum, hands down. I haven't been let down by overall system performance and I haven't had any problems with broken latches or white spots.

[QUOTE They're similarly priced, but the Al's got FireWire 800 and built-in bluetooth, faster RAM, worse cache, etc. QUOTE]
The AL has worse cache? What does that mean? The new 15" has 512k L2 cache? How is that worse? The 15" Ti has 256k L2 plus 1MB L3 but the L3's speed is at a ratio of 5-1 which makes it pretty slow so was that a misprint about worse cache on the AL or do most people think that the new Powerbook's cache increase is a joke?

Just so you're aware, it costs $350 to put a SD in a PowerBook after the fact.

Or you can buy an external SD for 150 dollars. Unless it is absolutely necessary you can do without one.
As far as the L2 cache, I think most people think more L3 is better, but it is not. L2 is the faster cache on the machine, more L2 yields higher benchmarks than less L2 and more L3.
People who use Tis versus Aluminum books note speed increases when using the aluminum box.

iDVD doesn't work with external drives. I don't think I've seen a name brand external SD for $150 either, but prices are dropping.

To the original poster: What are you going to be using the computer for?
If you don't need to burn DVDs, go with the 15'' aluminum.
