Is there a way to get the DVD Players video options to play back as 16.9 innstead of the letterbox or whatever it is. I have been able to do this with every DVD player I have ever had (not computer DVD players) I would just like to be able to do this with my Powerook.

The Apple DVD player handles anamorphic transfers just fine - you'll see a 16:9 window as expected.

If, however, the DVD contains a letterbox transfer then you'll always end up with a letterboxed window - since those black bars are physically part of the square image stored on that disc.

There's nothing you can do about the latter - every DVD player, whether hardware or software, will show a square image for letterboxed transfers.
