Did your 17" come with Panther, or with Jaguar? (and it presumeably worked fine (the DVD player) in Jaguar?

Was your Panther install an upgrade or clean install?

Have you tried trashing the DVD Player preference file?

Does the same problem occur when you logon as a different user?

My DVD player seems to be working fine...but..

I have a small problem, the laptop thinks its out of power and announces I need to shut it down when in fact the battery is full. However, I just keep doing what I'm doing and it never shuts down.

I just got a 17" Powerbook last week..1.33 ghz...came with 10.2.7 Jaguar..I ordered the Panther upgrade from Apple..

installed Panther..not as a clean install..just as an upgrade..

and my dvd player does play DVD's just fine (Just watched ALIEN on a flight today...the 17" is ok in a exit row seat but would be unusable elsewhere in my opinion..for flying in coach anyhow).

The screencapture command at the cli works fine whilst a DVD is playing

I would go back to Jag just to make sure it is a software problem. Then I would do a clean reinstall of Panther and no other software untill checking the DVD PLAYER. I would use every possible way before sending it in for repair. Strange things happen to some Powerbooks when sent in for repair. Not every repair story is a good one. BE WARNED.

Another thing to check before sending off to Apple Repair is whether or not the problem occurs with all screen sizes... Has the problem occurred with some of the other screen sizes? What are your player options set up to use?
